Every patient has the right to good health, medical care and treatment. The patients ombudsman works to promote and enforce patients’ rights.

What to do if there are concerns on care

If you have any questions or concerns about your care or treatment, you should first contact the staff of the unit that treated or examined you.

If the matter is not resolved by discussion, you have the right to a written appeal procedure. For a special reason, a reminder can also be made orally.

How can patient ombudsman help you

Patient Ombudsman

  • assists and guides in matters related to the application of the Patient Act
  • inform about the patient’s rights
  • advises and assists, if necessary, in drafting a reminder, complaint, patient injury report or pharmacovigilance report
  • works to promote and enforce patient rights

However, the patient ombudsman does not comment on the patient’s medical treatment decisions or whether there has been patient injury during the treatment.

What are the actions of the patient ombudsman based on?

The activities of the patient ombudsman are based on the Act on the Status and Rights of Patients (17.8.1992 / 785).

The patient has the right to good health and medical care and to the treatment associated with it. The patient must be cared for and treated in a way that does not infringe on his or her dignity, convictions or privacy.  Moreover, the law emphasizes the patient’s right to information and self-determination, active participation in his or her care and the status of the minor patient.

What is the domain of the patient ombudsman

The area includes Päijät-Häme Joint Authority’s specialty care, Työterveys Wellamo Oy and the following health centres: Asikkala, Hartola, Heinola, Hollola, Iitti, Kärkölä, Lahti, Myrskylä, Orimattila, Padasjoki and Pukkila.
